What is the best 1500VA Sine Wave UPS for a home lab?

Greetings Spiceheads,

I'm looking for Sine Wave UPS recommendations for my HP Microserver Gen 8.

Budget = $220 (less preferably)

Note: this is for my home lab, so I don't need an Enterprise level UPS. I'm looking at 1500VA UPS because they best fit my power needs.

The two UPS that I'm considering are:
- CyberPower CP1500FCLCD 1500VA
- APC UPS Pro BR1500MS

Does anyone have any experience with either of the models?

I read some reviews that warned against buying the BR1500MS due to constant humming and chirping.

Wardrobe malfunction caused by what?

I was working at my desk on just a typical day for a System Administrator, and I noticed a soft spot in my jeans, it appeared that it had gotten wet earlier in the day (no crude jokes or jocular humor now!) I touched it to see if it was wet or dry and to my surprise,my jeans tore (splitwith the grain) with just a simple touch!

I thought, what could have caused this? I had a very similar incident several months ago but never found a culprit.

Looking on the internet, many people said that in the absence of moth holes, different types of acid could have ill effects on clothing, especially denim. I thought to myself, "I haven'topened any batteries, all I have done today is change some network settings, resolved a few helpdesk tickets, and replaced a bad UPS!" There it was, could the battery have had a leak in the UPS or something?

Which UPS do I need for my setup?

Hi all. I'm looking for a UPS to go with my Dell Precision 5810. I know very little when it comes to power, watts, etc. and could use some help picking out one of these four variations of an APC device.

All I need it to do is have enough power to safely shutdown the computer in the event of an outage (I believe it comes with software which allows you to automate it). 5-10 minutes of power backup or whatever is a safe amount of time for the shutdown to happen is fine. I may add a low powered modem/consumer switch to it as well.

The higher end model is an APC 1500VA - there are 4 variations of it which are:
850VA / 510W
1000VA / 600W
1350VA / 810W
1500VA / 900W

Thanks for humoring me. Math is not my strong-suit. Cheers.

Inexpensive Switched PDU Recommendations

I would like to be able to remotely control power to a small handful of devices (2-3), but I don't want to shell out $400+ for a managed PDU. These devices all have NEMA 5-15 plugs and shouldn't pull more than a couple amps max per device. It doesn't have to be a standard rack mount unit either. If I can mount it to the wall that would be good too.

What recommendations do you have?

Thanks in advance!

Surge protector, UPS or both for best protection?

I have an APC Pro 1000 UPS and a Belkin BE112230-08 surge protector. I am not concerned with having a battery backup. What is the most efficient and safe setup? Should I only be using one and not the other or does plugging the surge protector into the UPS actually give any advantage?

Tripplite PowerAlert SMTP EMAIL Alerts Without SNMPCARD

Anyone know if their a way to setup the SMTP email alerts without a SNMP card for the Tripplite PowerAlert since it seems most mail services like gmail uses ports 587 or 465 with TLS/SSL which poweralerts doesn't have the option to use.

We trying to setup the tripplite email alerts but can't do it without support telling us to buy a 250 SNMP card for the unit.

If tripplite poweralerts doesn't work, does anyone use a third party one that works with USB connected UPS. I found winpower manager but it not seeing the UPS for some reason.

Looking to see if their any third party alternative UPS monitoring software that does email alerts that people are using.

I saw winpower manager but that one seems to not work on Win Server 2016 as it can't see my UPS.

Tried also UPS Assistant which not seeing it either.

Should I attempt to use this? Symmetra LX found in lot, appears unused.

Hello people!

I work for an ITAD company, and as such occasionally come across some useful stuff in our warehouses. I have set up a couple Poweredge R430 and R530 systems to test ina sort of lab environment. I set them up on Xenserver 6.5 and connected an old Equallogic PS4000 for storage. I know the Xenserver is outdated, but it is what our production servers are running on. That is how it was set up when I arrived here. The idea is to grow familiar with it and then test our backups, eventually making it "live" for redundancy. Obviously there isn't much point to this unless it will stay on during a power failure. Anyway, I came across this bad boy recently in the warehouse, and I am wondering if someone with more experience than myself can advise me if it is safe to use it and what that would entail. Although it ended up in our...

Automatic staggered power up after extended outage

Hey all,

I'm looking for recommendations on how to setup a UPS system (single or multiple, I don't care which) that provides for a staggered power up.  I'm currently using a combination of small UPS devices from CyberPower and APC -- and they're all small home office units.

In short -- I need devices to power on in a specific order, and the built in software/BIOS does not provide for waiting before powering back up when receiving A/C input again.

I need the firewalls up first, then the routers, then NAS and servers, and then the switches.

Too tall of order?  I'm certainly open to suggestions.

Thanks much!

Hi all. Can someone tell me how to reset my Powerchute software install to its initial settings (time to shutdown, etc.)? I have my login credentials so that's not an issue. Hopefully it's a simple thing. Business Edition 9.5. Thanks.

Do we need a power conditioner plus a UPS?

Greetings,

We are running a server room drawing under 20 amps which will probably stay that way.  Unfortunately we have a lot of outages in the late summer months and the power here is not so clean, so lots of voltage drops and spikes.  We recently lost a UPS due to some massive voltage fluctuations and so we're wondering if we should be investing in a 20 amp power conditioner in addition to a fat 6 - 8U UPS unit?

I've done a good bit of reading in the spiceworks forums about this, but now want to discuss some details.  If anyone is willing to chat it would be greatly helpful.

Thanks.

PowerChute Business Edition Logs - Did this UPS just reboot?

$

I need to determine why a server rebooted that is attached to an APC Smart-UPS 1500. (Or perhaps more precisely, why did the UPS stop supplying power to the server?)

Email at 11:06 AM from PowerChute Business Edition states that monitoring has started.

Email at 11:06 AM from SolarWinds states that a server has rebooted (which is attached to that UPS).

UPS Status does not show anything that seems to be of concern:

The UPS logs don't seem to spell it out very well if what had happened was a reboot of any sort. No indication of self-testing or power failure, either. From these logs, I cannot tell if maybe somebody actually powered this thing off then powered it on. But, maybe somebody who is familiar with these logs can tell if this UPS was actually power-cycled manually.

There were no Windows events leading up to this one to indicate a...

Is there a Powerchute like application that is free

Hello,

I have a server that is connected to a power strip that is connected to a UPS; we sometimes have power outages, in that case the ups power kicks in and give us 30 minutes. I want to get a powerchute like free application that will notify me when the server is being run on UPS battery instead of the regular power, so I can turn the servers off properly instead of them having abrubtly shut down. Any help is very appreciated. Thank you.

Eaton IPP - shutdown twice?

Hello Folks, I've got whats doubtless a corner case problem. For some reason, IPP is causing one of my servers to shutdown upon power fail (good), then, when power returns, the server boots and once the OS loads it then immediately shuts down again, despite the power being stable.

I'm reasonable sure IPP is the root cause, though determining this is no easy feat. After a fair bit of looking around, I've spotted the following as EVENT 1074 in Windows Server 2012R2 on the problematic server:

12:08am 13/5/2018

The process wininit.exe (127.0.0.1) has initiated the shutdown of computer XXXXX on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Legacy API shutdown
Reason Code: 0x80070000
Shutdown Type: shutdown

The original shutdown, caused my testing a power fail condition is here:

The process wininit.exe (127.0.0.1)...

Eaton Required Firmware Upgrade

We just bought a new but old stock 9390-40 from an Eaton dealer. They shipped it up here, we installed it. Now waiting on the Eaton rep to come start it up. Since it's old, they won't provide warranty of any kind but we got a deal.

So the dealer came back today requiring us to pay $4200 more for a firmware upgrade, because they didn't know it needed one, even after we agreed to their price and received it.

I can't find firmware for this model online, or even the Watcher - UpsFlash software that I think is needed to perform the upgrade.

Is this common Eaton practice? That's the most expensive firmware upgrade I've ever heard of...

Looking for a 50-60Hz ~1000VA NEMA 5-15P 120V UPS for home use

I've spent the last 3 days researching uninterruptible power supplies, I never knew they were so varied when it comes to specifications.

Last week I saw a good deal on a CyberpowerCP1000PFCLCD so I bought for my work PC. When I received it and connected up, it wouldn't turn on. I called their support and was told that it is because my countries power runs at 50Hz and the unit was designed to work at 60Hz.

I never knew this was a thing. I thought everything PC related ran at 50-60Hz like my PC's power supply.

So I am still in need of a UPS but I can't find any that matches my requirements. From my research it would seem the UPS' capable of 50-60Hz are for professional server environments.

Can someone here point me in the direction of a50-60Hz ~1000VA NEMA 5-15P 120V Pure Sine Wave UPS for home use?

N.b. My PC's power supply is from Seasonic...

What is the main differance between these UPS's? Which one would I want?

Hi,

Never really looked into UPS's before. Need one for a Network closet.

Dell T430

2 Switches (1 POE)

1 16 port DVR POE

Router

Looking at these 3 UPS's and not sure what the main differences are, besides the Voltages.

Powerchute Business Edition

I have three Back-UPS NS 1500M2 FW:957.e3 .D USB FW:e3 connected via USB to my utility VM (full usb pass-through) and I can use USBTerm.exe to identify them all. Powerchute personal edition works as well. The down side to the personal edition is the simple interface for a single UPS. I use all three for three different systems however I want a single reporting location. I was using NUT with my older APC however these new UPS devices are unsupported.

When I install the business edition, the installer detects the UPS and installs fine. When I open the webGUI it simply states: lost communication with ups.

I've disabled all but one UPS to verify powerchute personal works and it does. Services / server has been restarted several times. Any idea whats going on?

Thanks,

APC Back-UPS RS-1500 Battery Replacement Problem

$

Hi All. I have an APC Back-UPS RS-1500. The batteries needed changing, so I purchased some generic batteries that work well with my other UPS devices from Forza, Powercomm etc over the last 3 years.

I connected the batteries properly (4 in total in this unit), following a youtube guide. When I power on the UPS, I get a Green light for status "Online" and a Red Light for status "Overload" blinking in an alternative fashion.

Has anyone used genetic batteries in their UPS device? How can I overcome this problem? What am I overlooking? Thanks you may see my attached screenshots. Thank you.

APC BR1500G and APCBX1300G switching from online to battery back and forth

Hello,

I currently have 2 APC UPS devices (one BACK-UPS 1500 and one BACK-UPS 1300XS). Recently when I was testing my equipment most of the devices were powered on which I feel caused an overload and tripped the fuse in the box. Future plan to fix that is to have the UPS devices on separate fuses.

In the meantime I notice when I power back on the devices, (even just one of them) the devices are switching back and forth from Online to battery power within seconds. As I mentioned both of the UPS Devices are on the same fuse however no devices have been added (or taken away) since the overload.

UPS 1: 1300W (4 consoles, Projector, Yamaha Receiver, computer, Subwoofer) not all on at the same
UPS 2: 1500W (2 Server, Modem, Firewall, Switch, other low voltage drawing devices)

I feel that I may need to set the threshold or sensitivity levels of...
