We all know that the use of a UPS is important when making sure your servers stay up and shut down properly during an emergency action. However, what do you guys think about the use of them in your network closets? Mostly for the switch you have?
When I came on board, I noticed that all of the network closets where I am have a UPS. However, the UPS is not large enough to power the switch. They basically have a small ES750 by APC. It could power one (core) switch (pulling 590W) for a limited time; which I think was their intention. Can we discuss the idea of using a UPS for surge protection vs. the actual usage of powering during an outage?
What category do you fall under when you choose a UPS for your network closet?
