UPS safety suggestions

Hi everyone,

Our main UPS providing redundant power to our servers went out last week, the batteries leaked and gave off that wonderful sulfuric smell in our server room. The unit is still covered under warranty and we have a replacement to be delivered tomorrow. As you can imagine our biggest concern is what would happen if this would have occurred outside of office hours?

We have all of our servers and UPS on a single rack but since this happened we are now concerned about the safety of our servers. Sure, there is equipment insurance but we'd rather not take our chances and go through all that hassle. My boss is concerned about a fire safety issue and I'd like to know what you guys have done to mitigate this issue.

From what I understand, an UPS will only be affected when you have a lot of power outages and spikes. I have noticed during the course of its lifetime (18 months) I could hear it switch to battery and then switch back. Not sure if this due to "dirty power" as some have described our building power.
