UPS redundancy setup (Smart UPS 3000 & 1500)

Hi,

I have two UPS (one APC Smart UPS 3000 and one Smart UPS 1500).  Currently these are connected to two Dell servers running ESXi (one power supply of each server plugged into each UPS).

Up until now, the UPS haven't been set up with Powerchute, so basically if the outage lasts longer than both UPS the power just dies - So I'm now looking at the best solution to safely shutdown all guest OSs on the ESXi hosts.

I've started by installing the Powerchute virtual appliance and got as far as the stage where it asks whether to put it in "Single" or "Reduntant" mode ... Initially I thought redundant, however on investigation, the APC site advises that for the redundant configuration both UPS needs to be the same model.

So now I'm not 100% sure.

I then thought the best solution would be to have powerchute only shut down the VMs when power is lost to the Smart 3000, therefore if power is lost to only the 1500, no issues everything will run fine on 3000, however if there is a full powercut the VMs will be shutdown safely.

The issue with this plan is that if the 3000 just dies, the 1500 will take the load, however when it is out of juice all servers just die without a safe shutdown.

Can anyone think of the best solution (without me going to buy another 3000).
