Eaton 5P 850 - Detection Issues

Hello all!

I recently purchased a few Eaton 5P 850 UPS's and have run into some issues with Eaton's monitoring software (IPP / IPM)

As a test bed I hooked up one of the UPS' to a windows 7 machine via USB cable. The first thing I have noticed is that the usb connection CONSTANTLY drops and re-connects, the sweet serenade of a usb device connecting and disconnecting every 30 seconds. Tested with multiple USB cables and even multiple UPS, and finally, even on different a machine to rule my test bed out as being the problem. The Eaton hardware seems designed to constantly drop its usb connection?

Now this may be the cause of the main problem, the Eaton Monitoring software cannot detect the UPS when connected via USB. The device does show up in Device Manager when it is connected (between drop outs of course) but the software wont pick up when doing a quick scan.

I have reinstalled and uninstalled both IPP and IPM numerous times trying to get this to work. Ive had each of them installed solo and both at the same time. No dice.

Interestingly enough though, The software can detect the UPS when connected via serial, unfortunately for our server environment this simply isnt acceptable, USB OR BUST.

I've noticed in this thread http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/382512-the-new-eaton-5sc-ups-review-it-get-one-free People were noting a similar problem, but aside from using the latest version of the software no help was provided.

I really hope someone can shed some light on this before I start using them as doorstops.

Thanks in advance!
